Special Programmes
Communication for Life is a family-oriented centre. Clients with caregivers who are committed to participate in the sessions are most suitable for the following programs.

  1. I CAN TALK (for Children with ASDs, PDDs, and Down Syndrome)
This program, designed to address the functional communication of children with various communicative and developmental disorders, meets the increasing need of these children to develop spoken language in their everyday situation. I CAN TALK employs an eclectic and multi-disciplinary approach (comprising of individual and group therapy, and sensory integration/oral-sensory motor therapy) to help these children achieve their maximum communicative potential.
  2. HEAR in SINGAPORE (Aural Program for the Hearing Impaired/Cochlear Implantee)

  3. The primary aim of this program is to help individuals fitted with auditory devices succeed in mainstream society. HEAR in SINGAPORE uses techniques from various approaches especially auditory-verbal ( www.auditory-verbal.org), auditory-oral and effective speech therapy strategies to suit individual needs. HEAR in SINGAPORE is proud and boasts of its involvement in habilitating Singapore 's first children with BILATERAL COCHLEAR implants (CI) . It is the first and only private setting in Singapore , which sees individuals with CI from many parts of the world.

  4. GROUP SPEAK is an extension of services provided to children who are currently seen in individual sessions.
  5. Goal is to teach children social skills in the context of typical games and activities.
Pragmatics involve three major communication skills:

    • Using language for different purposes, such as
      •  greeting (e.g., hello, goodbye)
      •  informing (e.g., I’m going to get a cookie.)
      •  demanding (e.g., Give me a cookie.)
      •  promising (e.g., I’m going to get you a cookie.)
      •  requesting (e.g., I would like a cookie, please.)

    • Changing language according to the needs of a listener or situation, such as
      •  talking differently to a baby than to an adult.
      •  giving background information to an unfamiliar listener.
      •  speaking differently in a classroom than on a playground.

    • Following rules for conversations and storytelling, such as
      •  taking turns in conversation.
      •  introducing topics of conversation.
      •  staying on topic.
      •  rephrasing when misunderstood.
      •  how to use verbal and non-verbal signals.
      •  how close to stand to someone when speaking.
      •  how to use facial expressions and eye contact.

It is not unusual for children to have pragmatic problems in only a few situations. However, if problems in social language use occur often and seem inappropriate considering the child's age, a pragmatic disorder may exist. Pragmatic disorders often coexist with other language problems such as vocabulary development or grammar. Pragmatic problems can lower social acceptance. Peers may avoid having conversations with an individual with a pragmatic disorder.

  6. VITAL STIM
  7. for Adults and Children with Dysphagia and/or Dyspraxia.

(The first private clinic in Singapore providing electrical stimulation in treating infant, children and adults with various motor swallowing and oral motor problems).

  8. ACADEMICS- Literacy and Numeracy & Handwriting Skills

  9. Literacy & Educational Therapy

We provide literacy, educational therapy and learning support services. Our educational therapists work with children in pre-primary up to those in secondary schools requiring educational remedial sessions, such as reading, mathematics, coping strategies, organizational skills, focus / attention issues, handwriting, visual-tracking and memory issues.
Sessions are structured to meet the needs of the child and are conducted either on (a) One-to-one basis or (b) Group basis, limited up to 3 students.
Our therapists tailor programmes to the needs of the student and are trained in a variety of approaches including:-

    1) Orton-Gillingham Approach
The Orton-Gilingham approach is language-based, multi-sensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive and flexible. It is an intensive, sequential phonics-based system teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings. The method accommodates and utilizes the three learning modalities, or pathways, through which people learn—visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

    Other Services

Our other services also include therapy, observation and supervision during home and school visit. Our therapy session caters to individual's needs, and primary caretaker(s) plays an important role and must be present during the therapy session. We also conduct workshops for parents and teachers locally or overseas. Contact us for more information.
